Fun Winter Activities Near Lowell, MA

A winter getaway to the Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts can be downright swoon-worthy, especially when you’re calling Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa in Tyngsborough your home base for the trip.

Our elegant resort, set on 12 acres along the Merrimack River, will shower you with the finest in hospitality as you enjoy everything the season has to offer in our area, from outdoor recreation and sightseeing to cozy indoor dining, shopping, concert-going, and more.

Here’s a look at some of the activities you might consider pursuing while staying at our AAA Four-Diamond property, a mere 35 miles north of Boston!

Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Winter Hiking During Your Tyngsborough, MA Getaway at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa

Extensive trail systems in lovely swaths of public land provide plenty of opportunities to strap on cross-country skis or snowshoes—or maybe just a good sturdy pair of insulated boots, depending on the snow cover (or lack thereof)—and enjoy a crisp, sunny afternoon.

Some fine options close by for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking include the 1,000-plus acres of the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest, which offers some six miles of lovely trails. You can also go skiing and snowshoeing in the historic, glacially molded landscape of Walden Pond State Reservation, soaking up the same woodsy and lakeside vistas that one Henry David Thoreau did back in the 19th century. History and outdoor recreation: not a bad combo, we’d say!

Meanwhile, you’ll find more than 15 miles of trails and cart paths ideal for cross-country skiing in the Groton Memorial Town Forest, with a nice mix of easy flats and more huff-and-puff hilliness.

Speaking of easy flats, that’s the name of the game within the J. Harry Rich State Forest, which allows you to glide on your skis (or tromp on your snowshoes) through enchanting winter woods along the Nashua River.

The 11-mile Nashua River Rail Trail, popular among bicyclists much of the year, also becomes a topnotch corridor for cross-country skiing when the snowfall’s adequate.

And there are more: Other nearby options for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing near your Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa accommodations include the Sherburne Nature Center, the Hunter Property, and the Yudicky Farm Conservation Area just over the state line in New Hampshire.

Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snow Tubing

With the height of modern Merrimack Valley luxury yours to enjoy here at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa this winter, you’ll find yourself well situated not only to enjoy Nordic and snowshoeing trails, but also some truly fantastic downhill delights courtesy of Nashoba Valley Ski Area (79 Powers Rd, Westford, MA), less than a half-hour from our property.

This long-standing ski area—it kicked off its first season back in 1964—comes served by four lifts, four conveyors, and four rope tows, and offers fine downhill skiing and snowboarding, including lighted nighttime slopes. Races and skiing/riding lessons are also on offer here.

But Nashoba Valley Ski Area isn’t only a destination for skiing and snowboarding: It also happens to maintain the largest snow-tubing park in New England. We’re talking 18 groomed tubing lanes (yes, 18), a conveyor lift, and two handle tow lifts. When it comes down to it, there aren’t too many folks out there who can’t get into the essentially all-ages appeal of snow tubing—and Nashoba Valley Ski Area’s a great place to tap into that appeal while staying with us at Chateau Merrimack Resort & spa.

Appreciate Some Regional Cultural Heritage

As a guest of ours, you’re also spoiled for choices when it comes to indoor cultural attractions, which are all the more inviting when the Merrimack Valley winter weather’s a little on the frightful side. (Of course, “frightful” can translate to great conditions for winter outdoor recreation, but maybe you’re not feeling like playing in the snow this particular moment in time—and that’s fair!)

Take in a concert, for example, at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell (300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell MA), which is also host to some top-grade athletics. There’s also a full calendar on tap this winter at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre (50 E. Merrimack St., Lowell, MA), with upcoming performances including:

  • A Christmas Carol, written and directed by Courtney Sale (through December 24th)
  • Red Riding Hood, a family-friendly show appropriate for ages 5 and up (January 10th through the 28th)
  • Dishwasher Dreams, written and performed by Alaudin Ullah and directed by Chay Yew, with a tabla soundtrack (February 28th through March 17th)

Over at the Whistler House Museum of Art (243 Worthen St, Lowell, MA), meantime, you can explore a historical landmark—the birthplace of artist James McNeill Whistler, set within an 1823-built house and host to the most venerable incorporated art association in the U.S.—and a permanent collection especially focused on American (and particularly New England) art of the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. Among the museum’s current temporary showings is the Annual Juried Members Exhibition 2023: All Creatures Great & Small (through January 13th), celebrating our animal friends and comrades.

You could also explore the many heritage landmarks of the Lowell National Historic Park, such as the Boott Cotton Mills Museum, or navigate your way to the gravesite of celebrated Beat novelist and poet Jack Kerouac in Lowell’s Edson Cemetery.

We are, of course, only scratching the surface when it comes to the Merrimack Valley and Greater Boston’s arts-and-culture draws—and we haven’t even touched the fabulous shopping and dining on offer!

You’ll also enjoy world-class dining available right on site here at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa thanks to our Pino Steakhouse, which offers a creative blend of seasonally inspired Mediterranean-French cuisine. Best Hotels Near Wineries & Breweries Near the Merrimack Valley

Epicurean pleasures are part of the foundation of our hospitality here at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa, and, as we like to say, fine wine’s in our DNA. Oenophiles love our 60,000-bottle-strong wine cellar, The Vault. And our on-site restaurant, Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse, offers a full menu not only of wine but also craft beer and other refreshments.

In other words, you’ve got plenty of high-quality libations to enjoy right here at our resort in the Merrimack Valley. But our location also provides the perfect springboard for touring some of the region’s wineries, tasting rooms, and craft breweries.

Here’s a look at just some of the options on that front in and near the Merrimack Valley, all of them easily reached from our serene spread here at Chateau Merrimack!

Modest Roots Brewery (45 Middlesex Rd, Tyngsborough, MA)

Situated right here in Tyngsborough, MA, the family-owned and family-run Modest Roots Brewery is mere minutes away from Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa. This small-batch nanobrewery makes some really fantastic beer: from the Mob of Emus IPA and Take a Chance Cream Ale to the Suzy is a Headbanger Stout and Road to Nowhere Pale Ale.

The taproom over at Modest Roots Brewery is as friendly and inviting as you could ask for, popular among locals and out-of-towners alike.

Epigram Brew Co(394 Middlesex Rd, Tyngsborough, MA)

Another great Tyngsborough craft brewery, Epigram Brew Co. boasts a 15,000-square-foot facility that churns out such winners as the Temptation New England IPA, Eternity in an Hour New England Double IPA, Opportunity Kölsch, Divine Milk Stout, and Prickly Pear Peach Metamorphose Fruited Sour.

Epigram Brew Co. also offers a full pub-style menu that includes wings, pretzels, burgers, wraps, salads, and pizzas.

Nashoba Valley Winery, Distillery, and Brewery (100 Wattaquadock Hill Rd, Bolton, MA)

This must-visit operation’s three-pronged name reveals its multifaceted appeal. Better than 60 acres are farmed here, including a vineyard and orchard growing heirloom apples. Nashoba Valley Winery itself got its start back in 1983, and now produces nearly 40 different kinds of wine: from classics such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to the Amora – Blackberry Port-style Wine, the Blueberry Merlot, the Baldwin Apple Wine, and the Artemisia Dry Vermouth.

In 2004, Bolton Beer Works launched within the Nashoba Valley Spirits umbrella, producing craft brews (including the flagships Bolt 117 American-style lager and New England-style Mother Apple IPA) as well as hard ciders.

And, yes, there’s a distillery on site as well: Nashoba Valley Spirits, producing everything from a single-malt whiskey to pear brandy.

Throw in the eatery on the grounds as well (J’s Restaurant), and you’ve got quite the draw for anyone looking to sample some of the region’s rich array of fermented beverages. And it awaits you only about a half-hour away from Chateau Merrimack!

Aaronap Cellars (28 Carlisle Rd, Westford, MA)

A mere 20 minutes or so from our resort and spa, Aaronap Cellars is a 2011-established microwinery specializing in small-volume artisinal wines: reds, whites, rosés, and dessert wines among them.

Aaronap Cellars winemaker Noel Powell utilizes meticulously selected grapes and fruits from top-quality vineyards, orchards, and other supplies across New England and elsewhere; partner vineyards in Massachusetts include Chace Hill Vineyard in Lancaster and Coastal Vineyards in South Dartmouth. The maple syrup, meanwhile, for Aaronap’s Famous Gold Maple Wine hails from the Berkshires sugarbush of Dufresne Sugar House.

Navigation Brewing Co. (122 Western Ave, Lowell MA)

Fabulous craft beers—pale ales, IPAs, Belgian-style brews, Hefeweizens, summer sales, barleywines, a knockout Milk Stout—await you at Navigation Brewing in nearby Lowell. Settle in at the taproom to enjoy samples, tasting flights, full pint pours, growlers fill, and to-go cans, and consider taking the brief tour of the brewery operations.

In warmer weather, it’s hard to beat the pleasures of the outdoor beer patio, where you’ll have a hard time resisting getting a cornhole game going…

Marble Ridge Winery (11 Marbleridge Rd, North Andover, MA)

Set on the lovely acreage of the historic Marble Ridge Farm, established way back in 1680 and roughly a half-hour east of Tyngsborough, Marble Ridge Winery produces small-batch craft wines from sustainably grown California grapes. You’d be smart to make a reservation to enjoy a tasting here, sampling such styles as Cabernet Sauvignon, Sparking Rosé, Riesling, and Chardonnay.

Merrimack Ales (92 Bolt St, Lowell, MA)

Another fine Lowell-based craft brewery, Merrimack Ales produces a diversity of sensational suds out of its 6,000-square-foot facility. The current lineup of beers being poured at the Merrimack Ales taproom suggests the creative and playful spirit here: Strike Zone Blonde Ale, Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout, Cheatah Double IPA, Vanilla Coconut Cream Ale, Who is Keyser Gose?, and Whatta Melon Ale.

Broken Creek Vineyard & Winery (614 S St, Shrewsbury, MA)

A bit farther afield, but still less than an hour’s drive from Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa, the family-owned Broken Creek Vineyard & Winery produces its vino on 40 handsome acres in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Those products range from a variety of reds and wines to various Special Edition wines, currently among them Blush (a blend of Petite Pearl and Cayuga White grapes), Raspberry Frost (ideal for the holiday season), and Rose, made from South African Pinotage grapes.

Able Ebenezer Brewing Co. (31 Columbia Cir, Merrimack, NH)

Just a short drive over the New Hampshire border, Able Ebenezer Brewing Co. is another must-try regional craft brewery. Named for Ebenezer Mudgett and his fellow New Hampshire citizens who resisted the Pine Tree Law imposed by the British on the colonies, this veteran-owned and operated brewery whips up such fine craft beers as the Veterans Blend New England IPA, Burn the Ships Cherrywood Smoked IPA, and Lady of the Lake New England Lager.

Enjoy in the taproom or out in the heated outdoor beer garden, and take advantage of the regular lineup of food trucks swinging by.

Other Regional Craft Breweries & Wineries to Check Out on a Getaway at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa

Starstudded as the above list is, we’ve still only scratched the surface when it comes to breweries, taphouses, and wineries within easy day-tripping reach of Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa. There are plenty of other great places to try if you’re a lover of craft beer, a devoted oenophile, or both during your stay. Here are just a few others to check out:

Here at Chateau Merrimack, set in the Merrimack Valley in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, we’re happy to boast another of the real standouts in the metro region: Pino’s Mediterranean Steakhouse. This is not your average surf-and-turf joint, but a really exceptional restaurant combining Mediterranean and French influences in a creative, seamless, and seasonally informed menu that wows both visiting diners and overnight guests of our AAA Four Diamond resort along the Merrimack River.

While our bar and lounge are open for a light menu, Pino’s is currently temporarily closed, as we’ll get into, but it will be reopening soon—in early December, in fact—and you really won’t want to miss its newly revamped menu!

Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa in Tyngsborough, MA

A gorgeous dining space that includes both indoor seating and an outdoor patio provides the attractive and welcoming stage for Chateau Merrimack’s exceptional on-site dining.

Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse features the impeccable culinary vision and formidable kitchen talents of Executive Chef Moe Bisher, truly one of the linchpins of the entire luxury hospitality experience here at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa.

Pino’s Executive Chef Moe Bisher

Chef Bisher was born in Israel, and in the course of his formative cooking education he studied at multiple four-star and four-diamond restaurants, delving into the amazingly diverse and deep-rooted cookery traditions of the Mediterranean Basin. He cooked in kitchens from Lebanon and Dubai to Cyprus, Turkey, and Jordan, learning the intricacies of some truly storied cuisines and foodsheds.

Upon immigrating to the United States, Chef Bisher’s culinary universe expanded—especially with regard to French cuisine, which he added to his gastronomic arsenal in his new home.

This multifaceted and wide-ranging culinary journey—and that’s the best way to describe it, really—helps inform all that Chef Bisher does in the kitchen of Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse.

But while our Chateau Merrimack restaurant is certainly guided by a holistic philosophy and aesthetic with regard to cooking, it’s no static enterprise. Chef Bisher and his Pino team are always questing for new flavors, new dishes, new approaches—and we all, as diners, are the happy beneficiaries of this zeal and enterprise.

Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse’s Revamping

Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse, temporarily closed for improvements, is set to reopen in early December—just in time for lots of festive holiday get-togethers and getaways! The bar and lounge are open with a scaled-back but fabulous menu each and every day from 4 to 10 PM.

The temporary closure is all about refreshing the Pino menu with new, innovative, exciting dishes: a natural part of such a dynamic eatery’s nuts-and-bolts. Horizons are being broadened, new flavors tinkered with, and general gastronomic awesomeness concocted in this behind-the-scenes work.

We couldn’t be more excited to unveil the revamped menu at Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse: We think it’s going to knock your socks off!

Culinary Highlights of Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse

Of course, past Pino menus have done plenty to amaze our Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa guests and drop-in diners alike. Mediterranean and French techniques and flavors coexist in happy harmony, along with plenty of other wide-ranging influences.

A marvelous medley can be had by combining cold mezza plates such as baba gannouj, lebneh, humus, and tartare with fried kibbeh, falafel, crispy calamari, char-grilled chicken, and other hot mezza delights.

And from the Shawarma Beef Burger and Kofta Lamb & beef to Prime Sirloin, the Mediterranean Sea Bass Filet, and Black Tiger Prawns, the grilled entrées at Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse have always been showstoppers.

Throw in mouthwatering desserts such as Apricot Mahalabiya and Baklava as well as a full list of libations—from specialty cocktails and wines to draft beer and hard seltzer—and it’s easy to understand why Pino Mediterranean Steakhouse at Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa has become one of the most talked-about dining establishments in Tyngsborough, MA—and, indeed, in all of Greater Boston.

And besides the apples themselves, a fall visit to Parlee Farms can treat you to the bone-deep delights of some apple cider donuts and warm apple crisp!

Hill Orchard

Other options within convenient day-tripping reach of Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa include the historic, roughly 20-acre Hill Orchard (4 Hunt Rd, Westford, MA), owned by the Town of Westford, which contracts with a farm manager to preserve its working agricultural legacy.

When conditions are favorable, Hill Orchard—only about 15 minutes away from our Tyngsborough resort—offers pick-your-own apples.

Drew Farm

Not far from Hill Orchard, you can steer your way to Drew Farm (31 Tadmuck Road, Westford, MA), which supplies its U-pick visitors with such apple varieties as Cortland, McIntosh, Empire, Golden (Yellow) Delicious, Autumn Gala, Evercrisp, and Macoun.

Other Fall Pleasures on a Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa Getaway

When you head out for a pleasant afternoon of orchard- and farmstand-hopping from your Chateau Merrimack Resort & Spa guest room or suite, you can also anticipate, much of the U-pick season anyhow, some absolutely delectable fall colors. It doesn’t really get much better than combining apple-picking with some good old-fashioned, and downright world-class, leaf-peeping!

And the typically postcard-perfect fall weather—not to mention that smoldering seasonal scenery—invites hiking on the extensive local trails, biking quiet roads, and paddling the Merrimack River.
